CoMPLEX is a world-class interdisciplinary centre, applying cutting edge techniques in mathematics, physics, engineering and computer sciences to problems in the life sciences and biomedicine. CoMPLEX is housed in purpose built premises on Gower Street in the heart of UCL. Our research is organized across the biological scales that contribute to biological complexity:

Applications are invited for 2011/12 entry to the 4-year combined MRes/PhD programme, Modelling Biological Complexity in UCL CoMPLEX.

  • Biomolecular Mechanisms (Imaging, optical and scanning probe approaches to nanoscale bioscience)
  • Integration of Cellular Function (Cancer biology, immunology and computational approaches to genomic, metabolomic and    proteomic data)
  • Physiological and Neural Systems (Systems Biology of physiological systems, biophysics of vascular fluid mechanics, hearing and ion channels, neuroscience of vision and hearing)
  • Evolution and Dynamics of Populations (Molecular evolution, evolutionary genomics and proteomics, regulation of gene networks, evolution and ecology of populations)
  • Systems Biology (A combination of theory and experiment to study the mechanisms underlying complex biological processes)
  • Special Initiative in Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular Research (Systems biology and networks, advanced imaging & computational analysis, chemical biology)


The MRes is designed to give students a broad overview of the cutting edge research at the interface of the life and mathematical/physical sciences. Foundation courses provide essential background knowledge in mathematical, computational and physical techniques and a broad introduction to core biological concepts and systems. A range of interdisciplinary research-driven projects follow in which students gain experience of different research techniques and a range of areas of biological interest. Students progress after the first year MRes onto an interdisciplinary PhD which can be drawn from any of the research themes.

Applicants must have or expect a good upper class 2nd or 1st class degree in any area of the mathematical, physical, computer, engineering or life sciences (or equivalent EU/overseas degree).  For students from the life sciences, some mathematics experience is necessary (e.g. A Levels or higher).

Studentships for UK and EU students are available funded primarily by EPSRC with other studentships provided by the MRC, BBSRC and British Heart Foundation. Studentships cover tuition fees and pay a tax-free stipend (?17,090 in 2010/11).

Applications are welcomed from International students who are able to self-fund or who intend to apply for a UCL Overseas Research Scholarship.
